Millions of people worldwide will practice how to “drop, cover and hold on” at 10:15 AM on October 15 th during the “Great Shakeout”. Participation is a great way for you and your family to be better prepared to survive and recover from an event such as the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The yearly event is an opportunity to review and verify our earthquake response procedures.
Anderson Island Earthquake Response Check List:
- Before the Exercise: Review the Earthquake Response for your household: https://aiprep.us/respond . Download the complete response guide, see page 6, “Earthquake”
- At or Before 10:10 am, listen to 93.7, 88.5 on your FM radio or NOAA Weather radio broadcasts (NOAA channel 3 or 4)
- AT 10:15 AM: The FM Radio Stations and NOAA will broadcast the Emergency Alert System (EAS) message to kick off the event.
- DROP, COVER, HOLD ON!
- DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down by shaking and reduces your chance of being hit by falling or flying objects.
- COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand. • If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath for shelter • If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall • Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops. • Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts • No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
- AT Approx 10:20 am: Review the 10 Steps “After the shaking stops” list in your aiprep response check list (Page 6, “Earthquake”.)
